Our first assignment in our literature class is to read the story, The Bracelet, by Yoshiko Uchida. The story tells about a girl named Ruri who lived in Berkeley, California during World War II. We will learn about a very sad chapter in American History which occured on the West Coast of the United States right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japan in 1941. All American citizens of Japanese descent were forced to be interned in prisoner-of-war camps because the US government believed that they were all enemies of the US.
Your homework assignment, which is due on Thursday, November 30th, is to:
- Read The Bracelet, beginning on page 150 of your textbook. As you are reading, put yourself in Ruri's place, and be prepared to discuss the story in class.
- As you read the story, post a comment to this blog entry with definitions of words that you do not recognize and have looked up using the Virtual Online Thesaurus. Each student should have at least the following vocabulary words: evacuated, interned, aliens, forsaken.
1. evacuated- removed from an area for a purpose
